A Social Affair: The Power of #Hashtags

Hashtags are a way for a person or business to provide a searchable topic across the internet. Are you one of the many who is scared of a little #hashtag?  Many business owners simply neglect them in their content because they are unsure how to use them and don’t want to use them the wrong way. The hashtag has been around for nearly a decade and the trend keeps growing stronger so this is a bandwagon you want to jump on.  75% of people on social media use hashtags, so it's important to understand what they are and why they should be used.

Here are 3 tips to help harness the power of hashtags to expand your social reach.

Tip #1 - Know how to use Hashtags Across Various Platforms

Hashtags all have the same purpose, which is to generate a wider reach for a social post but they can and should be used differently across various platforms such as Instagram and Twitter. You will need to differentiate your strategy based on which site to generate the most #buzz. Hashtags became a thing on Twitter back in 2007 & they are still used today.  Did you know tweets that contain them get twice as much engagement as those without them, and 55% more Retweets? Key take-away here: it is extremely important to use hashtags on twitter but with a 140- character limit using just 1-3 hashtags is best.

Instagram allows you to have up to 30 #hashtags. The best way to include them is to place one or two hashtags in the context of your caption. Use these as your key takeaways. Then, after you post, comment below your post with up to 30 hashtags to create awareness of the industry, service, or product that relates to your post.  You don’t want to use too many or too little.

Tip #2: Stay On Top Of Trends

Social Media sites often have a list of trending topics (aka #hashtags) that are being used the most that day. This is a great way to create engaging content everyday by using these trending #hashtags to create more views and awareness of your post. On top of trending topics always pay attention to hashtags that are forever popular: #motivationmonday #humpday #FactFriday and #throwbackthursday, for example.

Tip #3: Create Your Own Hashtag

If you want to further identify your business online, you can create your own unique hashtag to allow your customers to engage with you more easily. It also acts as a history keeper for you to go back and see everyone mentioning your topic. This is where you need to do your research, get creative & make sure no one else uses your unique hashtags. A great example of this is Coke’s #ShareaCoke campaign or Audi’s #WantAnR8.

Always remember to keep the length of #hashtags short & sweet. They are meant for people to be able to find content easier from key words. Let your hashtags do some serious work on growing your social profiles. #makeithappen.
